Discover the Ancient Art of Floating Ink

Join internationally acclaimed artist Catherine Nash for a hands-on exploration of suminagashi, the Japanese technique of water-based marbling. This mesmerizing art form dates back to the Heian period (794–1185) and involves floating ink on water and transferring the swirling patterns onto paper.

In this playful, non-stressful workshop, you'll:

  • Create multiple one-of-a-kind marbled papers

  • Learn traditional suminagashi techniques

  • Bind your favorite sheets into a beautiful blank journal to take home

About the Instructor

Catherine Nash is an expert in Japanese and Western hand papermaking, encaustic painting, and mixed media. She has taught across the globe, served 6 years on national faculty with R&F Paints, and has been a core faculty member at the Sonoran Desert Museum Arts Institute since 2003.

What to Bring

Instructor will provide a variety of papers and free handouts. Please bring:

  • Notebook & pen

  • Pencil & eraser

  • 2 bamboo sumi ink brushes (available via Amazon, Posner’s, AZ Art Supply, etc.)

  • Archival glue stick

  • Any specialty paper you'd like to marble

  • Lunch, drinks, and snacks
