| Works from the Contemporary Calaveras Series
This series is based on Mexican Day of the Dead folk art traditions. Prints of skeletons doing everyday activities are called calaveras in Mexico. The famous Mexican illustrator, Jose Guadalupe Posada, dressed his skeletons in contemporary clothes and placed them in everyday scenes. My skeletons are also based on people and places from my life. However, my figures don't represent the dead as much as the living with some of their bones revealed. These calaveras drawings start out as ink on Fabriano watercolor paper using reservoir pens. I then scan them into Photoshop at 300 ppi for minor alterations, cropping, addition of border and finally printing out as open edition digital/giclee prints. My art is represented in numerous collections in the USA, Mexico and the South Pacific. I taught scientific illustration and photography at the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ.
